A Beautiful (Long) Thing
A poem for your Monday (and everyday)
The day is long, but it’s not gone, so yes, you can still read that book, and make a salad from the tomatoes from your garden, and drizzle it with extra virgin olive oil, and be generous with your salt. Yes, you still have time to read another page in your book, and make that phone call, and send that text and the email that’s been sitting in your inbox. The day is long, but it’s not gone, so there is still an opportunity to go outside and wiggle your feet in the grass. Take out the bin of chalk and draw. Pull out the bubble machine and let them bounce and blow. Stare at your child as they play. As they dance. As they make up the words to a new song. The day is long, but it’s not gone, so tell your spouse that you love them. Give them a kiss and then another. Call your mom if you want to hear her voice. Do the same for your Dad. Your grandparents. Your best friend. The day is long, but the people you love are still here — and so are you. And that is something. Everything. A beautiful thing.
